Crystal Shapes & Their Meanings

Updated: Sep 27, 2023

Crystals have been used around the world for millennia to bring emotional, physical, and spiritual alignment. Certain crystals, such as Selenite or Himalayan Salt, are used to raise a vibration and cleanse a space or object of unwanted energy. Other crystals, such as Obsidian or Black Tourmaline, are used for grounding and protection purposes. If you're like me, you probably have a growing collection of crystals in all different shapes and sizes - but have you ever wondered what the purpose of those different shapes are or why you seem to gravitate towards certain ones? Check out this simple guide!

Raw/Rough Crystals

Raw crystals are coveted for their connection to Earth/Gaia as they are used in their natural state. You may notice that the coloring is a bit less vibrant due to the lack of a polish and there may be pieces of the host rock material still there, but these crystals still pack a powerful punch. Shamans, Earth Signs, Natural Healers, and those that work with the Fae may feel more drawn to raw crystals. Raw crystals can be used in any way you'd like, just be aware that certain raw crystals can be dangerous when placed in water, sanded down and inhaled, or ingested so it is best to do your research first.

Tumbled/ Polished Crystals

With tumbled stones, the energy is able to flow around steady like a river. Since they have been polished, they will typically have a glossy finish which makes the colors pop. Tumbled crystals are great to carry around in your pocket or in a medicine bag with other tumbled crystals. Tumbled stones with a vein that goes entirely around, like this Green Aventurine and Snake Skin Agate, can be given away as wishing stones.

Palm Stones

Palm stones are larger polished crystals that typically will take up the size of your hand. Sometimes palm stones are hand polished which gives them an extra unique edge. Palm stones are great for placing on the 7 energetic Chakra points to clear and align each. They can also be held alone in your hands or lap during a meditation. The weight of palm stones makes them ideal for sleeping aids and stress reducers.

Crystal Eggs

Crystal eggs are typically used to bring in the Spring season and Ostara. Christians may view the egg as a symbol of The Resurrection of Christ and the Easter Holiday. In all other senses, eggs represent fertility, new life, new beginnings, cycle completion, and abundance. Place a crystal egg on your altar or sacred space to bring in good luck. Meditate with a crystal egg to aid in pregnancy and health.

Crystal Spheres

With crystal spheres, the energy is even throughout and flows in all directions at once. Spheres are great to hold in your hands or lap during meditation. I recommend keeping your spheres all together in a single bag, each in their own designated medicine bag, or alone somewhere on a stand. It is important to keep all transparent crystal spheres (such as Clear Quartz, Citrine, Rose Quartz, etc.) away from direct sunlight as they can magnify a sunbeam and cause fires both outdoors and indoors. Crystal spheres used in divination should be stored properly and covered with a cloth for protection purposes.

Crystal Pyramid

With a crystal pyramid, the energy is very strong and grounding at the foundation allowing for a very deep meditation. The energy is then directed up towards the sky at a single convergence point. Pyramids are wonderful tools for accessing the Higher Realms, Akashic Records, Angel Guidance, Spirit Guide Messages, and anything Divine. Pyramids can be placed in a crystal grid during meditations or around your spiritual space for that extra boost of energetic connection.

Harmonizers

Harmonizers, or rounded wands, can be used to roll out stiff muscles, get the blood flowing, or for use in Reiki work. Harmonizers are said to balance the Yin & Yang energy and resolve energetic blockages by bringing us into balance. Meditate with a harmonizer to clear obstacles from your path. Bring a harmonizer with you during water travel for safe sailing.

Crystal Cube

With a crystal cube you get a very steady grounding energy. Cubes are strongly associated with the Root Chakra and can be used for reconnection with Gaia. If you are feeling drawn to cube crystals, you might want to consider taking them with you on a walk outdoors. Cubes can also be placed in the corners of a room to spiritually seal, ward, and protect your space. Keep a small cube in your car for protection from other drivers and the elements.

Crystal Hearts

Hearts are associated with unconditional love, self-confidence, soothing negative thoughts, removing low vibrational energy, and health. Crystal hearts can be held in meditation, placed around a space for added comfort, or given as gifts to our loved ones. Can be used for love and romance spells!

Points/ Arrowheads

Much like a pyramid, the energy of a point all comes together at a single place, usually pointing in one direction like a wand. Place the point in the direction of where you would like the energy flowing towards. If you have a double-edge point, the energy will flow evenly in both directions. Points can be used in manifestation, wish fulfilment, intention setting, and decision making. Place a point in your office or work space for extra focus and precision. Points can also be used in crystal grids or alone.

Druzy/ Cluster

With a druzy, the energy is meeting at multiple points that surround the crystal. This raw energy is then projected in multiple directions depending on how many points there are and what direction they go in. Much like pyramids and points, clusters are great for accessing the higher realms and making spirit contact. Place a druzy around your home, office, or spiritual space for slow and steady healing. Sparkly clusters are great for working with the Fae, healing your Inner Child, and raising your vibration.

Crystal Core

Crystal cores are cylinders that have been drilled out of the Earth. Cores typically have a bit of the parent/host rock as well as the desired crystal. Think of these as a combination of Clusters and Points. Cores are best placed on an altar, in a sacred space, or work station. Cores.

A Note on Crystal Care

Be aware that most crystals will fade quickly in direct sunlight. If you would like the color and shine of your crystals to be maintained throughout the years, avoid placing them in windows or right under bright lights. Popular crystals such as Selenite, Himalayan Salt, Celestite, Angelite, Opal, Lepidolite, Malachite, Pyrite, Turquoise, and all Calcites should never be placed or cleansed in water for risk of damage. Instead, choose to cleanse these delicate crystals with a smoke cleansing bundle, incense, sound bowls, bells, or meditation with focused intent.

With love,

Thanks for sharing! All these crystals are so beautiful. My favorite ones are the crystal towers because I can easily feel their energy and it is also a beautiful decor on my desk as well as in my witch altar. Mines come from https://metaphysical-store.com/collections/crystal-tower and I really recommend them! ☺️
